Having a society of educated and helpful citizens begins with modeling good citizenship on a daily basis for our children. Early elementary learners also need focused instruction history, geography, government, and economics. In 2nd grade, social studies often overlaps with other subjects such as reading, writing, and math. Students have the opportunity to integrate much of what they are learning into the activities and projects of their social studies curriculum.

What is Taught in 2nd Grade Social Studies?

For many students, second grade is the first year of dedicated instruction in social studies. The specific content may vary from state to state, however, most second graders will be acquiring an understanding of:

What humans must have to survive (needs vs wants)

Their national identity (American holidays, landmarks, and symbols)

Their place in the world (basic geography skills)

Their community (what makes a community and the jobs that keep it operating)

When choosing a 2nd grade social studies curriculum, you want to find one that offers standards-based content while promoting civic competence. A good curriculum will help students think critically, look at issues from many perspectives, and emphasize active engagement in the community and the world.

2nd Grade Social Studies Objectives

By the time your child has completed second grade, your homeschooler will have a much better sense of where they fit into their community, their country, and their world. A standards-based program will target goals like:

Understanding basic economic concepts

Awareness of key national holidays

Understanding the roles of citizens

Recognizing key national symbols

Using geographic representations to process information

In addition to direct instruction in these areas, there are 2nd grade social studies activities that will enhance your child’s learning. Look for opportunities to incorporate historical homeschool field trips into your schedule. Play grade-appropriate games that highlight geography skills. And check out library books that feature patriotic themes.
